Chapter 6
The Annual Getaway
Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages.
—Song of Songs 7:11
Amy and I have an ongoing debate as to which of our annual getaways was the best. It is a toss-up between an overnight in New York City and a weekend retreat in Colorado Springs. Both were special and definitely worth repeating.
In November 2011, we used airline miles and hotel points to take an overnight trip to New York City. Some people choose the beach. Others choose the mountains. My wife and I are new foodies and we like diversity in culture, so we chose the Big Apple.
A one night’s stay was all the time we had, so we made the most of it. We flew out from Springfield, Missouri, at 6:00 a.m. and hit the ground at LaGuardia around 1:00 p.m. Then we took a forty-five-minute taxi ride to the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. It’s a massive hotel on what feels like the busiest street in the world. We wasted no time checking in, dropping off our bags, and hitting the pavement.
We shopped, walked, and ate for the first five hours before taking in an 8:00 p.m. Broadway show. The tickets were a hundred dollars a pair from that last-minute ticket outlet on the north end of Times Square. About thirty minutes into the show, we realized that we had made a terrible mistake. The show was horribly vulgar. Listening to a ten-year-old kid repeatedly dropping the f-bomb wore me out. I looked over to Amy and said, “Let’s not waste any more time.” Her eyes lit up as if to say, “Great idea, our time is precious, and this is not the best use of it.” Upon exiting, we walked around Times Square a bit before retiring to the room.
The room was the best part of the trip. Bom-bom-chicky-chicky-bom-bom. Hotel rooms on annual getaways provide the perfect environment for enjoying marital intimacy. First, they are kid-free. There is no chance of them waking in the night and coming into the room. You can sleep naked, like you used to do when you were first married. Our three family rules are not needed on these trips. The three rules are (1) pick your clothes up off the floor, (2) flush the toilet, (3) and don’t bother Mom and Dad when they are wrestling.
Second, the room is clean, and you had nothing to do with cleaning it. It is luxurious, and you had nothing to do with furnishing it. Your shower has limitless hot water. You lounge around in three-hundred-dollar robes that you would never buy for home.
And don’t forget about the ice bucket. Amy cracks up at me because I feel the need to have ice on hand even though I never use it.
